We are excited to get going on a key research pillar focused on quantifying greenhouse gasses in urban and peri-urban agriculture as part of a NSERC-SSHRC Sustainable Agriculture Research Initiative: Toward sustainable urban and peri-urban agriculture for net-zero food systems.
Our new MSc student, Carling Serran is initiating this research exploring the effects of land-use transitions from grain to horticultural production in peri-urban agriculture. Carling will be setting up some exciting new research experiments at Trent Experimental Farm! Congrats Carling for winning an Ontario Graduate Scholarship for this research!
We are seeking new MSc or PhD students to lead research as part of this project within the Greater Toronto Area (start dates: Sep 2025-May 2026). Please reach out to me for more information!
This multi-institutional project (led by Drs. Marney Isaac and Adam Martin, UTSC) is pulling together an interdisciplinary team of 15 researchers, with expertise in soil biogeochemistry, crop biology, microbial ecology, and urban food systems, among others. It also includes eight partner organizations from the private and public sectors that are involved in food production, food distribution and land management.
